Steelmaking would be different if the iron source were direct reduced iron produced with hydrogen: the absence of carbon would affect slag foaming and nitrogen control. With this webinar, the DRITC aims to provide members with information on steelmaking with carbon-free material.

Geoff Brooks is a professor of engineering at the Swinburne University of Technology in Australia. He has previously been an associate professor at McMaster University and a senior lecturer at University of Wollongong. Brooks has published more than 200 papers on fundamental aspects of steelmaking, aluminum and magnesium production and worked with Tata, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp., BlueScope, Liberty, Dofasco, Stelco and Krakatau Steel on projects relating to DRI production, sintermaking, blast furnace ironmaking, electric arc furnace steelmaking, basic oxygen furnace steelmaking, ladle metallurgy and tundish metallurgy. He has won major awards from AIST, The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS), the Iron & Steel Society (ISS), ASM International and the Metallurgy & Materials Society (MetSoc). He plays the guitar and harmonica at a reasonable level but is a terrible trumpet player.
