Spotlight on Na2O and K2O Behavior in Blast Furnace Operation

The paper reviews sodium and potassium behavior from cast data from two independent blast furnaces. The operational data show that the accumulation and flushing of alkali, as slag basicity changes, is stronger for potassium than for sodium. This fits with the thermodynamic theory and laboratory experiments. The results and benchmark data indicate that treating sodium and potassium equally for operational standards is too simple. Retention time for potassium is about twice the retention time of sodium. Results are discussed for practical implications.
